Sharing DIY skills, one repair at a time
This International Repair Day, we're teaming up with the next generation in a nationwide campaign to empower practical know-how.
From dodgy door hinges to missing shirt buttons, we are proving that no job is too small when it comes to passing on essential DIY skills. To bring generations together and revive traditional repair skills, all while spotlighting the importance of sustainability, we’ve launched Fixer Uppers.
With decades of experience under their tool belts, residents, maintenance teams and community groups like local Men’s Sheds across the country are showing just how simple repairs can breathe new life into everyday items.
Across Care UK homes, residents have been sharing their DIY know-how while tackling tasks like mending clothes, restoring furniture, and repairing everyday household items, all alongside local schoolchildren, youth groups, and family members. From building bird boxes and upcycling furniture to sharing stitching skills and decorating planters, they’ve been proudly demonstrating that with a little care and creativity, small fixes can go a long way and that practical skills are worth passing down.
Things don’t need to be thrown away – sometimes all it takes is a needle and thread, a dab of glue, or a trusty hammer and nail. As part of our ESG policy, and our journey to net zero by 2040, we’ve also been working towards having at least one Sustainability Champion in each of our 160+ homes to promote recycling and greener practices.
